State and IRS Struggles

I haven’t been updating this site for awhile so I figured I should share a few things that have happened to our family recently…
In 2015 we again had to deal with the Internal Revenue as they wanted to take a large portion of the donations we received from our last fundraiser we had.
We received a “Tax Deficiency” letter and they were demanding over $10,000 be paid, which in essence, was all of the money we just received from our last fundraiser. It took us about 5 stressful months to prove this was for Calvin’s benefit fund and not a business.
Thanks to Paul Aschenbrenner from H&R Block and the U.S, Senator’s office (Tammy Baldwin) we were able to prove this wasn’t a business and could keep the donations.
In April of 2016, just months after Calvin was approved for a full year of nursing care in our home the State of Wisconsin re-evaluated the case and wanted to lower his cares to a home health aid.
We have nothing against home health aids but we found out that they are not skilled enough to care for Calvin’s severe medical needs to keep him from being hospitalized and they can’t administer medications throughout the day (and he needs many at various times).
Before we received in-home nursing care just a few years ago Calvin was in and out of the Intensive Care Unit at Children’s Hospital almost every 3 months and he would be in there from 2 to 4 weeks each time. So we are very concerned about this as it would be many steps backwards in the progress we have made with him.
Our pediatric nursing company resubmitted the application for skilled nursing care in May and we are still waiting to find out if he will be approved. It takes them about 3 weeks to review so we are praying he is approved.
A good thing did happen for us in the summer of 2015. We were blessed with finding a suitable handicap accessible home in Oconomowoc that needed very little work to convert for wheelchair access and could now move out of our 2 apartments we had been renting.
A portion of the May 21, 2016 fundraiser money will be used to pay for the building of the wheelchair ramp and renovating the downstairs bathroom for handicap accessibility.
