We Need Your Help
He can’t hear us, he can’t see us, but he can feel us.
This is our story and we are begging for your help…
Calvin Clark Brezgel was born in April 6, 2012 in Oconomowoc, WI. Dan wanted to name him Kal-el after superman, so we met in the middle and settled with Calvin “Clark”.
When Calvin came into this world, our life and the ones around us changed forever. We were blessed with another child, but little did we know what was coming ahead. Calvin was born with a rare genetic disorder that has only been seen in 40 people in the entire world.
A few hours after giving birth, we found out he not only was 100% deaf, but did not have eyes, they weren’t sure if he would ever be able to walk and if he would need feeding out of a tube attached to his ‘tummy’ for the rest of his life.
Since birth, Calvin uses an oxygen tank and a suction device to help him breath. Calvin is seizure prone, takes 7+ strong medications daily and needs regular care from many doctors, nurses and specialists. His condition is so delicate that at the drop of a hat he can transition from being healthy to being very sick.
It’s hard to imagine how a family can stay together through such challenging circumstances, but with the love and support of the many wonderful people that surround us, we continue to fight on his behalf to give him the best possible life he can have.
We are also struggling with the State to keep Calvin’s nursing care. Our biggest fear is that without these nurses, our son will have to be in the ER for weeks on an ongoing basis. These wonderful nurses have maintained his health, keeping him out of the intensive care unit at Children’s Hospital.
We both have a full-time parenting job and we also have a full-time job (Dan) and a part-time job (Deborah) just like any other couple out there. However, in addition to our normal activities with our children, we commute over 30 miles, several times in a week, to Children’s Hospital or other doctor practices in Milwaukee, to seek out specialists and nurse care. It has been a daily challenge; mentally, physically, and financially for all of us.
We are begging for your support. As you can imagine, we are buried in bills for Calvin and the family; we are struggling this year to keep our heads above water with over $800,000 in medical bills (this is after our health insurance has paid their part). Due to our growing stacks of medical bills, our wages have been recently garnished, impacting the caring for our son even more.
Words cannot express how much we would appreciate any help you could provide.
If you can find it in your heart to help with Caring for Calvin, here are some ways to support our little angel…
Each year we hold multiple fundraisers to help raise funds to meet the growing needs for Calvin’s care. These fundraisers have been an immense help to us and we cannot be more grateful of our community. We will always be in need of venue locations, volunteers, catering, sponsors, entertainment and advertising. Sharing information about our fundraisers also means a lot to us.
Our upcoming fundraiser is at Breakshots Huba-Huba Bar & Grill in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin on Saturday, May 21, 2016 from 12pm – 4pm.
At the end of the event, there will be a 50/50 raffle. We hope you can come!
